Day 264 (25th May) – Sapa to Hanoi to Siem Reap

9 06 2011

It was the same comfortable overnight train from Lao Cai back to Hanoi. From here we caught a flight to Siem Reap, Cambodia. As we left Vietnamese airspace and flew over Cambodia the landscape grew steadily flatter. From the plane window we could see the Tonle Sap Lake, S E Asia’s largest fresh water lake. As the dry season was coming to and end the lake was looking very brown and unimpressive. However, in monsoon season it can swell to six times its current size as the rivers that normally flow out to the sea via the Mekong Delta flow in reverse and fill the lake.
