Day 230 (21st April) – Shanghai to Guilin

9 05 2011

After our highly successful journeys on Indonesian trains, we were taking it to the next level in China and braving the sleeper train. We purchased a four berth soft sleeper and through some good fortune we were pretty much alone for the whole twenty hour journey. This was nice because the constant and unashamed staring was getting ridiculous and we appreciated the privacy.

We had hoped to appreciate some nice views of the Chinese countryside as we rattled along at a sedate pace. Unfortunately other than a few pagodas this part of China didn’t give us very much to look at. Furthermore with all this smog and dust that had been blown in from the Gobi Desert visibility was poor so I fell asleep almost instantly.
