Day 218 – (9th Apr) Solo

16 04 2011

Without an active, semi-active or dormant volcano near Solo, this was purely a cultural visit, also said to be the least Westernised city in Indonesia. We visited two palaces Kraton Surakarta and Istana Mangkunegaran, home to prince Raden Mas Said and other such Javan folk. Once kind of grand’ish, now a little dilapidated and a little rough around the edges.  Tired of walking in the heat we took a rickshaw around town and visited a busy market before boarding a train to Yogyakarta.

Despite being a basic commuter train, it was markedly better than the buses we had been taking, covering the short distance between the two cities in 1 hour compared to the buses 2.5 hours. This is definitely the way Java is meant to be crossed. There should be more railways….
