Day One Hundred & Thirty One (12th Jan) – Franz Joseph Glacier

Comfortably our worst day in New Zealand and blame lies squarely with the weather. A hundred kilometres outside Franz Joseph the blue sky vanished, to be replaced by cloud and eventually a steady and constant drizzle. We didn’t travel half way around the world for weather like this.

The real problem was that this poor weather meant that our planned Heli-Hike was cancelled. This would have involved a short helicopter flight up and on to the glacier. A couple of hours walk over the glacier and then the return flight in the chopper. Instead we ‘tried to make the most of the day’ and generally got rained on all day whilst doing a bunch of mediocre substitutes…
