Day One Hundred & Four (16th Dec) – Pucon

20 12 2010

The only bus from San Martin de Los Andes back to Pucon was at a painful 6am. San Martin de Los Andes is a quiet little town with a spectacular setting nestled in striking mountain scenery, often described as a mellower version of Bariloche. We just managed to stay awake to gaup at the mighty impressive Volcan Lanin standing snow capped at 3800m and smoking.

Back on the west side of the Andes and therefore Chile, we couldn’t help but notice the low cloud and lack of sunshine. Our fears about the weather were confirmed when in the travel agents we were told the trip to climb Volcano Villarica would not be going ahead as hoped tomorrow. Our choice was to hang around and wait for the weather to improve or head to a sunny Valparaiso. Like rock beats scissors, sunshine beats rain. We were on a night bus heading north a few hours later.
